Iyegwu Water Project (Kogi State)

Project Overview

Access to clean, safe water remains one of the greatest challenges in rural Nigeria. For years, families in Iyegwu, Kogi State, relied on unsafe streams and ponds for drinking water—exposing them to illness and long daily walks in search of water.

To address this urgent need, Oma HelpingHands Foundation launched the Iyegwu Water Project, a solar-powered borehole system designed to bring reliable, sustainable, clean water directly to the community.

What We Did

The project began with the drilling of a deep borehole and the installation of dual water storage tanks securely mounted on a steel stand. Powered entirely by solar energy, the system pumps and distributes water efficiently without dependence on electricity or fuel—making it both environmentally friendly and cost-effective.

Multiple public tap points were constructed, giving families quick and convenient access to clean water throughout the day. This change has dramatically reduced the long, exhausting trips women and children once made to collect water from unsafe sources.

The borehole was officially commissioned and blessed by Bishop Anthony Ademu Adaji, MSP, during a community celebration attended by local leaders, clergy, and residents. The event marked not only the opening of a water system but also the restoration of dignity, health, and hope for hundreds of people.

Impact

The Iyegwu Water Project now serves hundreds of households, improving sanitation, reducing the spread of waterborne diseases, and freeing up time for education and family care.

Women and children no longer walk miles for water, allowing girls to stay in school and families to focus on other daily priorities.

The project also strengthened local unity, as residents worked together to maintain the system and take shared responsibility for its upkeep—turning a single act of giving into a community-owned success story.

Transparency and Accountability

The project was executed under the supervision of local engineers and volunteers, with full documentation of materials, costs, and commissioning reports.

By using solar energy and durable infrastructure, the Foundation ensured that donor funds were invested in a sustainable, long-term solution that requires minimal maintenance and serves the community for years to come.

Looking Ahead

Building on the success in Iyegwu, Oma HelpingHands Foundation plans to replicate solar-powered water projects in other rural areas facing water scarcity. With continued donor and partner support, we aim to extend access to clean, safe water—empowering families and transforming health outcomes across multiple states in Nigeria.
